A masterful video tribute to 40 years of hip hop in 4 minutes

posted by Jason Kottke   Jun 06, 2017

Biggie, Nicki, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Biz Markie, Lil Kim, Public Enemy, Missy Elliott. In a video featuring 150+ songs from more than 100 artists, The Hood Internet has distilled 40 years of hip hop into a tight 4-minute video.

It’s not a chronological history of hip hop. It’s rappers from different eras finishing each other’s rhymes over intersecting beats, all woven together to make one song.

I just watched that three times in a row. Lots more Hood Internet in the archivestheir last remix was a retrospective of the past 10 years of hip hop and indie music.

Mixtape Volume 10 from The Hood Internet

posted by Jason Kottke   Mar 30, 2017

The Hood Internet has been pumping out mashups of rap, hip hop, electronic, and indie rock songs for 10 years now. For the 10th installment of their annual mixtape, they have compiled a list of their greatest hits.

It’s now 2017 and here we are with The Mixtape Volume Ten, aaaand wait. What’s with the subtitle — Best of The Hood Internet — is this some sort of greatest hits album from, uh, a website that DJs? Really? Yes. It is exactly that. Much like the first mixtape was a best-of everything we’d made to that point, this ten-year retrospective is 50 of our best blends (blends! there’s another synonym for you) from the catalog that we’ve willed into existence over the last decade. Listen to it, enjoy it or hate it, and together let’s all mourn the ten-year anniversary of the death of mashups.

Here’s to 10 more years! (via @j_blackburn)

The Mixtape Volume Nine by The Hood Internet

The Hood Internet has released their ninth mixtape. Ninth! The highlight so far as I listen for the first time: Daft Punk’s Around the World mixed with The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face. (via @mathowie)

Update: Downloads and track listing are available on The Hood Internet’s website.

I still can’t get enough of their latest Mixtape and here comes another one. The Hood Internet has done a 54-minute mix for Frank & Oak. You can listen to it below, on Soundcloud, or download by liking Frank & Oak on Facebook.

I’m 27 minutes in and so far so good.

The Mixtape Volume Seven from The Hood Internet

You know the drill: it’s a new mixtape from The Hood Internet:

Downloads, tour details, and more info on their site.

Update: I made a playlist on Rdio of the songs The Hood Internet used in Mixtape Volume Seven…sifting through their sources is a great way to discover new and previously overlooked music.

There are maybe 3-4 songs I couldn’t find on Rdio…they are either unreleased or mixes from Soundcloud. Enjoy.

Update: And here’s the same playlist for Spotify. (via @Afterschool)

Wooooo! The Hood Internet has just released the sixth installment of their Mixtape series. You can listen to the whole thing here:

or download it here. Their five previous Mixtapes are some of the most-played music in my collection…I’m listening to volume five right now actually.

Loving this new Trillwave 2 mix from The Hood Internet.

If you like that, here’s the first Trillwave mix.

“New” mix by The Hood Internet

posted by Jason Kottke   Jun 21, 2011

This looks to be about a year old, but it’s new to me: 57 minutes and 37 seconds of goodness from The Hood Internet.

It’s a little more chill than their usual stuff — “Trillwave is the soundtrack to the party after the afterparty or maybe to a sun-drenched backyard barbecue the next day” — but I like it a lot so far. (via @djgeekdout)

The Hood Internet Mixtape Volume Three

posted by Jason Kottke   Jan 09, 2009

I’m really enjoying The Hood Internet’s third mixtape. They take pop, indie rock, & rap songs and mash them up. For instance:

Jay-Z (feat. Lil Wayne) vs Xiu Xiu
Flo Rida (feat. T-Pain) vs Hot Chip
T-Pain (feat. Chris Brown) vs TV On The Radio
Lil Kim (feat. Missy Elliott) vs MGMT

Their version of R. Kelly’s I’m a Flirt mashed with Broken Social Scene from their first mixtape was one of my favorite songs of 2007, far superior to the original IMO.
