Was this painting originally entitled "Moonrise" or is this the name they gave it after the discovery? I'm interested to know what Van Gogh named it... you'd think he'd know what he was seeing, no? Well, perhaps not with all the absinthe and Dr. Gachet's wierdass prescribed medications running through his little body.

I don't know what Van Gogh named the painting, but if I ever paint anything, I'm going to call it "Absinthe and Dr. Gachet's Wierdass".

sounds like a band. I'm sure the van Gogh mullahs would never let some astronomer interloper rename a painting.

According to this more detailed article, art historians in the '30s identified the painting as the 'Moonrise' van Gogh mentioned in a letter to his brother.
